Buy Nothing Day: Saturday 25th of
November 2006 in Berlin/Germany
• What
started as a simple idea more than 11 years ago in North
America, (on the day after the US holiday called Thanksgiving
- America's busiest shopping day of the year) Buy Nothing
Day has grown into a worldwide celebration and demonstration
of consumer awareness and over-consumption. The Buy Nothing
Day campaign has sparked debate, radio talk shows, TV
news items and newspaper headlines around the world. The
ongoing global "war on terrorism" has sharpened
our appreciation of how tenuous and potentially catastrophic
is a voracious First World's dependence on foreign oil,
networked international money markets, and the utterly
uncompassionate survival instincts of multinational corporations.
Over-consumption creates long-term ecological problems
that aren't accounted for in the GDP.
People in more than 65 countries have decided
to make a personal statement by NOT consuming for 24 hours.
The ways in which people have marked the
Buy Nothing Day events worldwide have been as diverse
as the participants themselves.
The Buy Nothing Day movement is a 100% self-organizing
system.
This year, the Buy Nothing Day in Germany,
will be on Saturday, the 26th of November 2005. So start
planning your events, actions, demonstrations, projects,
NOW! We want to hear about them and to get others involved
to help make your projects a BIG success.
There’s no right way to celebrate
Buy Nothing Day. The idea is to do *something* *ANYTHING*
to start up Debate, make people Think and to take Action.
The shining hope for a revolution in human consciousness
lies in the actions of everyday people.
